Bringing Your Dog to Stay at Foxglove Cottage in Derbyshire

Benji

You are welcome to bring one well-behaved dog to Foxglove Cottage. Sorry but no dogs are allowed in Columbine Cottage. This area is very dog-friendly and there are numerous walks from the doorstep for you and your dog to explore. In our parish of Ashover there is a network of over 150 footpaths covering 28 miles.

Most of our local pubs make dogs welcome so you can enjoy a walk, a drink and a bar meal accompanied by your pet.

Unlike many cottage owners we do not charge you extra to bring a dog to stay in Foxglove Cottage but we do expect you to respect our property and to be considerate dog owners.

We therefore ask all dog owners to please abide by our Ground Rules.

Foxglove Cottage Ground Rules for Dogs

  • Dogs are not permitted on the furniture or in the bedrooms. We appreciate that your dog may shed hair on the carpet and we request that you vacuum this up before you leave the cottage.
  • Do not let your dog use the cottage gardens as a toilet. Pee can scorch or kill the grass and the gardens are also used by families with young children.
  • Clean up dog mess immediately (we supply waste bags) and place the sealed bags in the black wheelie bin. There is a shovel at the top of the cellar stairs.
  • Please keep your dog under control around the cottages and on the footpath outside. Alton is a farming community so take care to keep your dog on a lead near livestock. Part of Foxglove Cottage's garden is enclosed but other areas aren't so please be considerate about guests staying in our other cottage.
  • Please bring your dog's food and water bowls with you or use the dog bowls we provide. Do not use the cottage crockery as dog feeding bowls under any circumstances.
  • Do not dry your dog with cottage guest towels. If it is wet and muddy outside we request that you access the cottage via the back door and dry your dog in the kitchen. You will find wet wipes and emergency dog towels stored in the cellar.
  • Remember that your dog is on holiday too so please take him or her with you when you go out. Your dog must not be left alone in the cottage unless permission has been sought from the owners. This will be given on the understanding that your dog will be restricted to the kitchen area and that it won't cause damage to the cottage by scratching or chewing, or cause a nuisance to neighbours by barking or howling.
Moby on holiday

We realise that the majority of dog owners will regard these rules as common sense. We have regular guests with dogs who return year after year, and problems are rare.

If you aren't happy with our ground rules then perhaps Foxglove Cottage isn't the right place for you and your dog.

Dog-Friendly Derbyshire

You will discover that the Peak District is a wonderful place to bring your dog on holiday. There is an extensive network of public footpaths and bridleways plus over 65 miles of the UK’s best traffic-free trails. Many, like the Monsal Trail, are along disused railway routes.

A number of our major tourist attractions also welcome dogs. For example, you can take your dog into the formal gardens and park at Chatsworth House and to the Crich Tramway Village. The Heights of Abraham, Lea Gardens, Peveril Castle, Treak Cliff Cavern and Renishaw Gardens are all dog-friendly. Or why not take your dog on a Peak Rail trip?
